The Revolution knows that you work hard for your money and that testing new hunting and fishing gear in the lobby of your local Cabela's just doesn’t cut it when it comes time to drop some coin. So Jim, Trav and Mrs. Bunny, each week, put the industry's best new outdoor products to the test as they rank them in their Buy or Bust segment. They aren't in to cheap gimmicks, they don't care about what's sexy, they just want dependable gear at reasonable price and nothing else.
Camping is an activity that can be enjoyed year round, but "camping season" is generally identified as May to mid-October with the busiest time for campgrounds being during the months of June and July. Regardless of what time of the year you choose to abandon civilization for a few days, step into the woods and pitch a tent, a good experience is all about having the right gear. Your camping equipment can really be kept to a minimal amount, however campers need a few essentials and a good sleeping bag is one of them. The size, shape, insulation, weight and other features should all be considered. Summer time camping doesn't require a bag with hefty insulation, however having enough warmth to be comfortable through cooler nights is important.
The countdown is on until the start of the next big game hunting season. What will you be hunting with this year? Of the roughly 11 million hunters in the United States, about 32% of them hunt with a bow - compound, recurve, longbow or crossbow. Crossbows, sometimes controversial in the past, have really earned their place in the hunting space. Crossbows are highly effective in the pursuit of filling tags and they make hunting more accessible to everyone - young, old, novices, pros, physically challenged and more.
It's that time of year when you can combine the best of both worlds, hunting and fishing, and have a whole lot of fun. Now is a great time to retrofit your bow with fishing equipment and get on the water. Bowfishing is a great way to stay well conditioned throughout the summer months while improving your accuracy. On this edition of Buy or Bust it's all about the gear you need to get bowfishing ready.
In preparation for the fall deer hunting season, we're on a mission to build a highly effective, yet budget friendly deer rifle. There are more caliber options out there than you can shake a stick at, however we're zeroing in on a popular, up and coming caliber that has turned a lot of heads since its release a little more than a year ago. The 350 Legend from Winchester is a solid deer hunting caliber with an effective range out to about 250 yards. It has enough bite to knock down a monster buck, however the recoil is minimal, less than that of a .243. The minimal recoil makes shooting it enjoyable for virtually anyone - young or old, novice or pro. One of the big draws to the 350 Legend from Winchester is that it's a straight-wall cartridge and thus meets the requirements in several states where restrictions exist requiring straight neck cartridges. Previously, hunters in those states have been mostly limited to shotguns and muzzleloaders for deer hunting, but the 350 Legend now offers a rifle option.
Break out your plinking gun - it's spring, the weather is nice and it's the perfect time to ding a few targets, have some fun and work on shot placement. This week on Buy or Bust, we're talking targets and the new RangeMaxx Rimfire Spinner Targets.
It's camping season, y'all! That means it's time to get out of the house and rough it in the great outdoors. This week on Buy or Bust we're talking tents and the Cabela's Quick-Set Screen Shelter from Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops.
There is plenty of great fishing action to be had from the shore, however boats can provide anglers more access and the ability to cover a much broader area. The opportunity to cover more water also increases an angler's chance of finding and following the bite. The only pitfall of boat fishing is boat ownership itself. The initial purchase of a boat is expensive and the upkeep can be costly as well. Unless you are an angler that uses your boat frequently enough to justify those costs, you might find yourself looking for alternatives. Kayaks shine in this category and in this edition of Buy or Bust we're talking the new Ascend 133X Recreational Kayak at Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops and the benefits of kayak fishing.
Walleye aren't the hardest fighters of the sportfish species, however their light bite makes them difficult to catch. When it comes to walleye fishing equipment you definitely need a good spinning rod for jigging that will be strong enough to set the hook well, but sensitive enough to feel those subtle takes. This week on Buy or Bust we're talking about the Bass Pro Shops Prodigy® Walleye Spinning Rod that is designed especially for those finicky walleyes.
The concept of a bucket is simple - a tough outer cylindrical shell with a handle and a vacuous interior. It’s not a rocket science, Elon Musk kind of idea, yet it is a contraption that will stand the test of time, unlike other high tech inventions that will always become outdated at some point. As long as you have “stuff”, there will always be a need for buckets to carry it around in.
Knowing your way around a box, slate, diaphragm or other turkey call is important if you want to be a successful turkey hunter. However, don’t underestimate the effectiveness of a good decoy. Often, when done correctly, the visual of a realistic turkey decoy can be enough to not only pique interest but even send a love sick gobbler on the warpath and right into shooting range.
